- In England the number of people aged 85 years and over is projected to increase 85%, from 1,096k in 2007 to 2,029k in 2027 (86% in Wales).
- 278% increase in centenarians is projected, from 9k in 2007 to 34k in 2027 (100% in Wales).
- More people are finding life stressful or experiencing unemployment as a consequence of the emerging transition to new economic and employment structures, the demands of a knowledge society, the growing effects of globalisation, the need to shift to a low carbon economy and the increasing pace of technological innovation. ,
- As a result, the need for quality, life-long education has increased to maximise the economic benefits of globalization, adjust to the pace of technological change and meet the needs of the knowledge economy.
- Addressing threats to local communities from organised crime, terrorism, drugs, arms smuggling, people trafficking, counterfeiting and criminal exploitation of new technologies.
- Increased poverty - up to 7m people are at risk of under-saving for their retirement.
- Low income households, with fewer financial resources to cope, will be disproportionately affected by extreme weather events as they are more likely to be living in higher-risk areas, marginal lands and in poorer quality housing.
