Summary

Economics concerns the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services.  The likely concerns of a future economic system are many, but include:

  • The ability to respond to the need to mitigate the effects of future climate change (for example, reducing Carbon emissions) 1,2
  • Being better able to deal with demographic changes such as with a growing global population including a greater proportion of those in the middle classes who are more likely to demand international goods and services 1,2
  • Increasing levels of economic migration and increased competition between countries, regions and cities to attract and retain skilled labour 1,3
  • The end of a traditional cash economy 4.
  • Novel forms of the manufacture of goods and services.  Including being better able to respond to the demand to cater for individual needs and tastes and the increasing ability of consumers to create products which are then shared with like-minded communities 5,6

Impacts

  • Upon the required education and skills base of the workforce
  • The ability of successful private companies to deliver personalised goods and services will create demands for this in the public sector.  Local Government will be required to meet the needs of increasingly diverse communities

Relevance

  • To those involved in service delivery and education
