Summary
A report from a meeting of 40 GBN members in Istanbul in June 2006 discussed, through presentations, Learning Journeys, and a 'Fast Forward' exercise, five scenarios for the future of Europe in 2020:
Scenario 1: The Arc Arrives at Ararat. A story regarding the agreement of the, 'common infrastructure policy' which forms the next phase of EU enlargement.
Scenario 2: The United States of Europe. Which imagines the breaking down of resistance to immigration by way of the creation of a highly competitive knowledge-based economy.
Scenario 3: A European Super Power. Which looks at how oil and the euro bring together Moscow, Brussels, and Beijing to build the next set of trade and security regimes for the globe.
Scenario 4: Europe’s North Korean Surprise is a security story in which the big security threat turns out to be North Korea rather than Islamic terrorism.
Scenario 5: Europe Joins Turkey is a story which involves a citizen-led integrative movement, a “European terms of engagement” document created via a continent-wide wiki and a Turkish minister for the environment as the leading candidate for EU president in 2018.
