The aging population and the future of social care

From Future of Local Services to the Public

Summary

Debate continues as to the degree to which there is likely to be increasing dependence in general on social care services in the future.  Part of this debate concerns how local government is to respond to an ageing population and how this will impact on the demand for adult social care services.

However, in some analysis dependency ratios are likely to remain stable in the future due to changes in the pensionable age 1. While this ensures that, where people can, they are supporting themselves for longer, several related issues such as the demands of emerging economic and employment structures and undersaving for retirement may have an impact.1

Impacts

  • Greater numbers of those of a pensionable age requiring local government services

Relevance

  • To all those providing adult social care services.
